The merge is the first of a bunch of major upgrades to ETH. It has three major effects:
The first is that it reduces ETH's energy consumption by 99.9%. So all the "muh blockchain mining is destroying the rainforest" arguments just die overnight.
The second is that it instantly removes 10s of billions of dollars of annual sell pressure that is currently created through ETH miners needing to sell ETH to cover their costs.
The third is that it massively reduces the amount of new ETH that is generated.
