Well due to the number of anons making dirty bombs in their basements, fissile material is in very high demand. As demand goes up but supply remains the same, price will go up. The more that feds seize to stop anons from building bombs, the less that's in circulation driving the price up even more.

Thorium has always been supported by a small hippie cult that lacks the understanding that the genie is out of the fucking bottle on uranium and plutonium.
As long as America remains a nuclear power it cannot safely de-arm the world of nukes and will always need an infrastructure that produces and uses uranium. Maybe in some fantasy land we would have gone with the magic power of thorium or breeder reactors or some of the zany designs the soviets tried, but we didn't and there's no reason to try and put in the effort to switch the world over before fusion becomes commercial in the next century.
