An inverted yield curve means that investors don't want to "miss" the [recession followed by the Fed intervention (buying bonds)]

That's why they rather own long-term bonds, because the bet is on the recession and the Fed is going to buy all kind of tenors (3-month to 30-year) anyway. So owning the short-term bills could lead to missing parts or even the whole Fed intervention by being too early. Thus the yield curve is inverted.
