There is conceivably a place where speculation on assets that don't exist yet wouldn't be such a terrible thing, like say agricultural products or other commodities. Futures markets sre just as much of a corrupt shitshow as everything else but it's conceivable at least. And that's where sold but not yet purchased should end. There is no reason that a market where the winning edge can be measured in nanoseconds should ever have a failure to deliver.
