does anyone have experience using the standard deduction vs. itemized ?

i sure could use some real world help. i run my own consulting business, and have a fairly complex situation, i.e. i was employed for a company for the first half of the year and am now self employed for the remainder. want to write off as many expenses as possible.

also, hoping to even get a return though i've been a contractor for the last seven months and haven't paid any taxes. this could be bad. i've managed to save about ten grand since august. whats the best strategy here ?
