If you're worried about a paper trail the best move is to go to a local coin shop (or less optimally, a pawn shop) and buy in cash. As long as you buy less than $10k in a 24hr period there is no reporting requirement.

The problem is that the market entirely fake. For 99.9% of human history, commodities with limited supply have acted as money, primarily silver, but also gold, seashells, grains of wheat, etc.
The current system is, money is a paper receipt backed by the need to use it to pay taxes, and the government's use of force to forbid other mediums of trade. The federal reserve banking cartel prints assloads of these paper receipts, and give them to the banks, government contractors, and other well connected cronies. Wagies are last in line to receive the new money, and it's not a coincidence that income inequality started steadily climbing the moment Nixon ended the gold standard.
