Goldbacks are intended as a practical way to circulate small quantities of gold as money. Even silver coins had a tendency, historically, to get too small for practical use. I have some. But the creepy religious cult symbols turned me off to them.

FYI, goldbacks aren't paper and the gold is not exposed to wear. The gold layer is sealing inside two sheets of polymer. Might want to do just a tiny bit of research before shitting on something you know nothing about.

I see goldbacks as novelties, collector items, and fun gifts. Not good for stacking because they are too expensive. The real importance is as a proof of concept for gold money in very small fractions and so far I have not heard any disqualifying criticism on that use.

By the way, they fit nicely in a yen wallet. The Japanese don't like to crease their money so you can get non-folding yen wallets.

Just got back from six weeks in Japan. Visited the Ginza Coin shop at the suggestion of an anon here. Bought some Meiji-era silver to go with some others.

Also, as I suspected, it turns out that yen wallets are perfect for Goldbacks.
