It's almost a truism that we should be investing in index funds through their 401k/IRA. However, I almost never hear arguments against this, leading me to think that herd mentality is going on.

On the one hand, just because everyone knows its a good idea (like going to the gym), perhaps few people actually follow through.

What are some criticisms or reasons not to invest in index funds?
