Is foolish to get an apartment that costs more than the proverbial 1/3 of one's income?

Despite having a fairly respectable resume, the job market in my town is in the shitter and all I can find is $11/hr. I'm also about to move into my own apartment soon (no family in town and can't move in with friends) and the apartment I've chosen is $949/mo. Anything that costs less than that around here is guaranteed to be in the ghetto.

I've done extensive budgeting and I can just barely squeeze rent, utilities, gas, insurance, and food into what I'd be earning each month. I don't care about entertainment and luxury, those things aren't important so long as I can keep a roof over my head.
