It's quite fascinating to see LTC's presentation as the Silver to BTC's Gold carry through even today. Throughout most of history, silver was used as the common currency - whether in the form of coinage or simply the weight of silver (also known as hacksilver, very popular during the early Medieval period.) Gold was simply too expensive and too valuable to use in common exchange, and would be reserved for large purchases such as houses or suits of armor - to give a modern example, silver would be your fiat currency, and gold would be a cashier's check.

So it tickles me pink to see Crypto "Silver" be used in much the same way; a cheap and efficient means of utilizing crypto for common purchases.
