Video game producers started doing things to hinder trade-ins such as digital downloadable content to accompany the game itself.
pre-order bonuses are not the draw-in that it used to be and pre-ordering itself lost its meaning in the age of digital downloads.
Speaking of that, the digital downloads is the biggest hammer to nail shut Gamestop's coffin. but more so, if you were keen on getting the physical copy of the game you can order it from amazon or best buy or wherever and it will show up on your doorstep the day it's officially released.

So you understand now, yes? It's become redundant for most people. Instead of carving out some niche like creating a rental service, or a localized delivery service, or becoming a place to play games like a "cyber cafe" or holding tournaments and contests to drive people to the stores they've just sat there and decided to sell funko pops. basically imported "Think Geek"'s inventory into their stores and try to sell that shit in the stores.
Instead of, you know, expanding into more gaming territory like tabletop, board games, etc..ya know..become the one stop for all things that are games..they just basically became a section at Target.
