It was most likely Paul Le Roux.
Author of E4M, which was later used as a base for TrueCrypt. Possibly involved in further development of TrueCrypt.
He was involved in gambling business, early Bitcoin clients had code for GUI for a poker game.
The arrest of Le Roux, and the last posts by Satoshi to the original Bitcoin repository, occurred around the same time.
One of the names he used was Paul Solotshi Calder Le Roux, backed with a Congolese diplomatic passport.

Maybe his friends did. Monero was a fair relaunch of the scam Bytecoin which was premined but innovative. Turned out that it was still the bytecoin scammers launching monero though. They knew everyone had seen through the premine but they hadn't realized the mining code was crippled so the fair relaunch actually gave the bytecoin guys a mining advantage for a little while. Eventually good guys took over monero and the miner was fixed which is an interesting story (https://da-data.blogspot.com/2014/08/minting-money-with-monero-and-cpu.html)) but yeah monero was created by the same type of intelligent criminals as Le Roux.

By the time xmr was created Le Roux was already in custody but the ideas in cryptonote (monero original codebase) were discussed by satoshi and he was interested.
