Think about it harder. The rich boomer gains nearly $70,000 a year in non-liquid wealth, plus their paycheque which is liquid. The people who can't afford houses likely can't afford schooling for themselves or their children (if they can afford them). They're relegated to brutal labour work which destroys their bodies, or minimum wage jobs which will never get them to home ownership as prices continue to rise faster than savings. A minimum wage worker making 30k literally cannot save to keep up with a market where a 5% annual increase on a 500k house means a 25k price increase. Especially so when they have a rent to pay because they can't afford to buy.

In contrast, the boomer can send their kids to the best schools, give them a down-payment to ensure they own a home and they will be gaining the non-liquid wealth that keeps them ahead of everyone else forever.

Who's to blame? It's not a surprising answer: the banks. Consider for a second what the market would look like without the existence of mortgages. Could anyone buy the $800,000 homes that are all over the market? Not without decades of saving and lean living at a decent wage. Without demand, the supply increases and value deflates to match that. Prices would be checked by what people can actually afford. You wouldn't have a mortgage so you could actually afford to travel, have a family, vacation, etc. This is the fucked up part- your grandparents lived in this world. They bought houses either outright or for a very small mortgage. The boomers then created the housing economy and took out mortgages haphazardly to buy homes they couldn't truly afford until we reached the point where you typically can't buy a house without going through the bank. They stand to profit IMMENSELY on that, mind you.

33. Roughly 50K

5 years ago I thought real hard about dumping 6-8,000 of my 30k cash into bitcoin. Made up my mind to do it and the next day the only main exchange was locked down for weeks as banks panicked about being seen doing business with it.

Being a depressed unemployed person I had a hard time following through. IIRC Bitcoin was floating around $66 a coin then. I told myself then I'd make backups of my wallet and put them away for 5 years before checking back. 5 years later was when bitcoin peaked at 10K-15K. Probably would have sold most of it off at 10K and dumped hard at 13K. I did the math and realized it was in a bubble and even my own clueless mother was asking about it bitcoin.

Sometimes I still think about that potential 450-700K gain I almost made. Surprisingly the regret doesn't totally eat me up inside. Maybe the ever present depression is my secret armor. Take care of your mental health anons, being alert and clear minded might be what allows you to recognize an opportunity to escape the wagie life.
