Since most people don't have much if any gold or silver I doubt people will be trading whole coins except for bulk purchases. I think most coins will get cut into quarters or 8 bits and that will show if a coin is plated or solid. There just aren't enough people with enough coins to be bartering whole coins for things like a single meal and a drink or one sack of flour. If I pay you a couple coins for helping me around the farm how are you gonna split those coins at the market between the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker? You gotta break the coins up or convince those three to share two coins between them. And yea I know there are coins smaller than 1oz but even fewer people have those than the amount that have 1oz and up so I don't think thats feasible either.
