While I mostly agree with the "dividends are irrelevant" idea... the larger a company is, the fewer people who could hypothetically realize the "true" value by taking the company private. For mega-caps, there are only a handful of people on earth who could outright buy them, so the "bid" could be way below a "fair" value. In such an environment, it seems reasonable for a company to put in place a dividend so shareholders will more directly benefit from the company's cashflow.

Now in practice. Most mega-caps these days are "growth" stocks so they trade at absurd multiples anyways. But if they didn't. Then a dividend would definitely be a sound decision by management.

I am waffling between saving cash for a downpayment or saving cash for stock market crash (not really bullish on either real estate or broad equities yet). But a consequence of this is I'm missing out on interest income because "there might be a flashcrash". If this slow bleed continues I might just have to put some cash in high-interest savings.
