Owning a home is a lifestyle choice, not an investment. There is no guarantee that your home will grow in value or that the town you live in will remain a desirable place to live. Your home will most likely determine your job opportunities, choice of sexual partners, which school your children may attend, etc. The biggest costs in our lives are opportunity costs. If given the choice between renting while working a $150k annual job or owning a house with a $90k annual job, which would you prefer?

Last, a house does not pay dividends. On the contrary, you will need to pay for insurance and maintenance.

If home ownership is attractive to you and fits into your lifestyle, by all means go ahead. But doing it for purely financial reasons is a misguided notion.
