Hitler did 1 thing wrong (and the one single thing that matters; anything else is totally meaningless in comparison): Ally with Italy. That lead Germany having to help Mussolini in his pointless and selfish attack on Crete, which delayed the invasion of the USSR which ultimately led to Europe's defeat. If Germany wasn't allied with Italy and ignored Mussolini's request for military aid in Crete, then the USSR would've ceased to exist in 1941 and by that year or 1942 all of the USSR's resources would've been under European control.

Mussolini is truly a sad case. He was a nice guy with good intentions and Hitler saw him as a friend, but he caused Europe's defeat.

Wouldn't have mattered if the USSR had been defeated in 1941 since Europe would control all of those resources. That combined with zero military engagements in the east would've meant Europe could defend herself from any and all US attacks.

Germany did not depend on Italy, it was the other way around. The Italian attempt to take Crete was a total disaster and they desperately needed Germany's help. Later Mussolini had to be rescued by the SS.
