Dad didn't die. He just worked for a company from my birth till I was 20-ish, was the last of the old guard at Carpenter Co. he had worked every job but manager at, and new boss fired him over a run red light while he was trucking for the upteenth year. After that many years of loyalty, he was righteously mad. Took his 401k and other retirement out, became a rancher. "Retired" from that with his new gf and moved out to the four corners. He's coming to visit me and his newest granddaughter this friday. Just trades boomer stocks all day when he's not biking in the desert or other stuff he's always loved doing.
Meanwhile, I got my retirement gig as a rancher when I married into Texas oil money, and am going to grad school this fall since my knees are giving out on me (menisci never formed properly, apparently, on top of being a fat ass and playing football throughout middle/high school). Hopefully I'll have a son soon to carry on family name and help around the ranch.
