I've only plumbed the depths of the relatively clean and safe "storm drain" sewers, for draining rain off streets not nasty sewage. People would lose coins and jewelry all the time walking the sidewalks and streets which would roll into the drains well out of reach of the lowly humans on the surface and collect in the pipes below, silver tends to get a bit corroded but gold stays pretty fresh.

Yeah, it's not for pussies afraid of getting wet and dirty though. Pic is an example of some of the stuff sifted from storm sewers, the 2 gold rings (1 broken) were found within minutes of eachother. For jewelry normally it's rings, earrings and pendants that turn up. The silver gets a bit eaten up by the caustic conditions but is more common than jewelry in old storm drains.
