The global dollar system has runs its course over decades. We have "borrowed" and financialized the economy to a saturation point with debt, and "fake paper value". Understand that debt and capital are fungible, yet they are not the same. Debt (leverage) has to be paid back. And our economy is overleveraged to the tune of hundreds of trillions of dollars of paper claims to goods that can never be paid back.

Metals are a store of value because it takes times and energy to acquire the materials which are valuable and useful in their own right. They are an asset. In the same way you can take aluminum cans down to the recycling center and get money, the exchange happens because the materials are useful.

There is an image that gets posted here that shows historical prices of burgers, fries and drink etc. $0.12 for a burger is crazy. But that is because back in the day, your money was directly linked to gold, and literally transacted in silver and copper. These materials will always be useful and will always command some purchasing power. Whereas paper "claims" such as dollars, bonds, stocks and overleveraged real estate are propped up with leverage and can give back all of the "paper gains" caused by said leverage.
