Monero is the only cryptocurrency that has serious value because it satisfies a niche very well that fiat and PMs cannot, which is as the payment processor for darknet markets. Organized crime is also moving into it for money laundering.

Big downside for speculative purposes is that institutions don't want to touch it and everyone is afraid of regulatory pressure/exchange delistings as it's "drug dealer coin". Probably only a good idea to buy if you genuinely believe in it's ethos and aren't going to be pissed if the price drops.
