Yes, the economy is bad. A lot of people got flushed out of the workforce. Big companies were riding high on mountains of debt they couldn't afford until the bill came due.

A lot of dead weight got flushed out of the financial sector once shit start blowing up: fly by nice originators, hedgers that couldn't see the forest through the trees, low grade day traders, entire departments at banks either were laid off or people were just resigning before the axe came down.

The collateral damage is that it messed up a lot of people's retirements. Lots of people who were relying on their 401ks or other retirement garbage took massive hits.

If the US gov't had any sense, it would be trying to patch the holes in Glass-Stegal Clinton made and make sure that junk securities never touch the market like this ever again. Instead, those idiots are getting ready to push the GSEs to be back into subprimes.
