Stuck in the R&D/experimentation phase because everyone did their prototyping work on ETH and then ETH never developed the ability to scale like everyone hoped it would. It's simply not economically viable to use any of this stuff as long as it's still shackled to the dead-end of ETH's limitations. So now we wait for a competitor that can run the EVM better to slowly gain traction before the next phase of the industry can really kick into gear. The academics and the students they teach have all thoroughly romanticized ETH on ideological grounds, so there are roadblocks to overcome - but sentimental nerds *always* end up seething and coping in the end, it is inevitable.
