I went to college for chemistry. Got my BsC in '16 and currently getting my MsC. In the interim I was deemed "too valuable" for entry level positions due to my extensive research experience. So, I had been making necklaces since I was a child (tying leather together with beads on it), I applied a Jared's/Zales/Kay's/Gordon's (it's all the same damn company, (((Signet Jewelers))) out of Ohio), and they hired me as an apprentice. Stayed there for a year and a half before quitting as the boss never sent me off to be certified, even though I was making rings for an ex and doing necklace repair for a friend in my off time.

tl;dr applied at a jewelry store and became an apprentice. Boss never promoted me so I quit. Still dabble. Purely recommend just buying some scrap brass from Hobby lobby and burn yourself a few times figuring out soldering on a very small scale. Pic related, alexandrite and diamond ring I set all by hand for my now ex back in '15.
