Probably because something that reflected visible light is now producing visible light. Producing visible light only requires the bonding of elements with oxygen, which surrounds everything in the atmosphere. Take a Bunsen Burner for example, if you reduce the inflow of oxygen you turn a blue flame into a yellow flame. That's because the bonding process is producing more CO2 than H2O.
