it literally can. even without any upgrades, eth has the same computational complexity as bitcoin. the whole "smart contracts can't scale, eth is a mess, etc" is simply lies from btc maximalists; both eth and btc have polynomial complexity.

the difference is, next year eth will be sharded and almost free to use, while btc will cost ridiculous amounts to move because every transaction needs to go to every node while computations are wasted on pow, which is less secure than pos and prices everyone out of mining except for a handful of Chinese miners.

lightning network will not save bitcoin, since you need exponentially more cash in your wallet than what you're microtransacting with, and you always have to be online to keep a channel open.
