What we know:
Melvin lost a shit ton of money
% of GME shorts stayed roughly the same

How about:
Melvin liquidated its shorts, hence the loss,
and bought new shorts of the overpriced GME to regain losses. Base of Melvin shorts is now 400$ and not 10$ anymore.
