In the past, if one did not have a family, or did not live in a tight social circle, and or did not save and invest properly through their younger years, that person would be in poverty when they become old and no longer useful to society. As such, many countries adopted a mandatory pension system, FORCING people to at least set aside some cash, held in trust by the government, for their elderly years. Here's the thing though, in democracies, politicians get elected by promising short term benefits to voters. A quote from a wise men "But the people are retarded", and as such, the politicians who pay out more to the elderly for "doing the right thing" get voted in much more often. As such, every dollar a young person puts into a government forced pension fund is being spent as soon as it is collected. Not to mention the old voters also get a say in who is elected, so they are incentivized to increase their own pension payments as well. The two main problems in my opinion are
1. Why should I care about old fucks who have a shitty family. Humans are made to breed and be social, if you didn't breed, invest properly, and become penniless when you are old, why should I be forced to give you jack shit?
2. It's unsustainable. There are soon to be much more old people than young people in many western countries, there will have to be an exponential amount of babies being born to support these old people, but birthrates are collapsing, and less people are being born every day.

In all honesty, I have no idea how to fix the problem without causing a riot.

How can they just change ETH from pow to pos and call it a day? I didnt fucking buy ETH pos, I bought the pow version which is SUPERIOR.
