Lads, in a surreal twist, I ended up being gifted some coins, probably because I saved a guy's dog I think. I'm going to post the ebay (not mine) instead of any pics of my own end because why not / save time.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/175576248116 (not mine, don't care if you click / buy / whatever, just linking for details)
tl:dr; each coin says it's 0.500 gold content, the three coins together feel like they're maybe an ounce idk. so that'd be roughly 0.5oz gold, yet the seller is trying for 1500 because it's some limited edition thing.
obviously taking it to a coin shop would probably just get you the melt value (while they then turn around and try to get the collector's value).

What would you do? My first thought was to tell the guy to exchange it for easier-to-handle (mostly) pure gold and he said it was a hassle but if I wanted to I could do it, then just gave it to me. I thought he meant to do it for him but no it was a "just keep it and do whatever" (a gift). I have zero experience with ebay selling or anything like that and feel I would run into problems trying to do it.
