Do I sell core for cash?

newfag here, how do I get into this? I'm currently holding 1.4 eth and 530 ada. I'd like to see some gains in 2018 but I'm not sure what to go with. Part of me wants to risk it all on a shitcoin but I feel like buying more eth or some ltc would be safer, guaranteed gains. Can someone help a newfag out?

As I understand it the btc mining pools not only mine btc but also manage the flow of transactions across the network, correct?

So is the 7 tx/second limit on transaction speed determined by the "code" of bitcoin or the fact that mining hardware is primarily designed to mine and not process transactions?

Can this "code" be altered? Or can a separate network be created that makes transactions and mining completely independent operations?

IE mining remains in the hands of the ASICS while transactions are processed by server banks that are designed for such a thing?

I may not even be making sense with these questions, just trying to wrap my head around everything.
