The problem isn't that they told him to clean his room. It's that in most cases they did it for him. People who lack structure as a child may seek authoritarianism, and children who have too much discipline are more likely to become far left leaning in response to hatred of an authoritarian. I had freedom when I was a child, didn't have to clean my room / plates etc. I thought it was baller at the time, but it made me lazy and disorganized. On the other side my marxist friend had an authoritarian stepdad who charged him rent to live in his moms house before he even turned 18 and eventually threw him out for not paying.

Peterson is a tricky person to understand, you have to go in with a fair bit of knowledge to get the most out of it, but most people go in blind after finding his videos at a bad time in their life. His approach to things is literally Nietzsche's overman + Oversimplified Jung + National Socialism with "community" substituted for race. That's why he shits on Hitler so much while actually completely rationalizing ethnonationalsim from a psychological and evolutionary perspective. He's far smarter than people give him credit for. Shame about his daughter though.
