>It was a cold evening in Paris on that day as we settled in for the night. The shudders on the windows rattled as the wind picked up, a light snowfall starting as the gas powered lamps cut on. It was picturesque, a beautiful scene just like I had always imagined as a child. I blinked my eyes as I felt little Marina hug me from behind, snapping out of whatever trance I was in. The stew had nearly boiled over before I covered it, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Every meal was important, now that Marina was eating for two. "Marina..." I said, breaking from her hug and turning around, picking her up into the air and hearing her giggle, looking at that sweet face and seeing nothing but joy, wishing I could feel the unblemished innocence she felt. I wasn't jealous of it, I had stolen hers months ago in a passion that left us both sweating and exhausted on my bed back in her hometown, before her European tour. No, I appreciated it more than anything. Why should I not be as unabashedly happy as her, with my lover at my side and a child on the way? What right did I have to feel sorrow or regret? I set her down and gave little Marina a deep kiss on the lips before whispering to her that supper was done, and to get to the table. Two bowls of hot stew for the both of us, the first hot meal of the winter season.
