Gold and silver were never really currency as such. A currency is a unit of account and even in antiquity the units of account were drachmas, denarii, etc. These were based on silver and the coins contained it, but ultimately they were derivatives of silver. If gold and silver were used currency in themselves the unit of account would be weight of pure metal, in grams, ounces, or whatever. Like a pack of eggs would be 2g of silver or something, for example. Doesn't necessarily mean different standardized physical manifestations (gov coins) couldn't exist for easier trading, but they wound have face value expressed in metal content. I would welcome this because it's as honest as it gets. The British pound as originally defined is the closest implementation of such a thing. It was just a pound of silver, plain and simple.
If you mean when PMs are going to money again, then the answer is they still are. Plebs just don't understand.
