Ok let me try again with geometry

Since the base and height of a triangle are all that is needed to find the area. If the dot were to be anywhere else on the x axis, for instance, the area of a triangle drawn from the top left corner to the dot, and the bottom left corner to the dot, would be the same area. So we can draw that out, and since the line comes form the midpoint of the square we know that the triangle formed from THAT midline with the new triangle will each be half and so they will be equal.
So the answer is 28.
