Everyone ITT is retarded, OP. You can tie your love of the sciences into investing. Being scientifically inclined, you probably keep up on new discoveries and cutting edge work in your field as well as others. Next time you read an article or hear about a new technology being developed, go research who's doing the developing and which company ultimately owns the intellectual property that applies that science to a marketable product. There are usually a few companies pioneering any such technology and then you must do your due diligence and seperate the chaff from the wheat. I find that even if one company might have a better product at the time, at this early stage it comes down to the core team at the company. Research the CEO, the R&D team, find out about these guys and get to know them from afar. A good team can eliminate competitors more efficiently before the public is even aware of the technology en masse. Buy extremely low, or wait and gather funds for the IPO. The stock creeps up as the technology gets more coverage in scientific media outlets. There will be 3 to 5 more opportunities to enhance your stake in the company. News comes out that a competitor made a fairly superficial step up in the eyes of the public. The market overreacts, stock drops, and you buy again, because you have faith in the research you've done. 10 years later, the company is in the public spotlight or being bought by a big pharmaceutical or tech firm. Your $3/share original investment is now worth $60/share and you sit back and laugh at the idiots on /biz/ who, years ago, said it couldn't be done.
