God damn I haven't hit character limit in a long time.

But yeah, keep them as a barometer to see how the various political tribes that infest your specific area are reacting to the outrage of the month. Partisan media is a double-edged sword in that it needs to feed the need of its subscribers/patrons, who want their various ideological fantasies confirmed with lots and lots of smart-sounding words. If you want to know all of the angles of an issue that can't fit into media written for the average joe, take that issue and see how partisan media responds to it.

Politico by contrast is for hopeless politics nerds (such as myself) who masturbate to copies of Hansard and the Congressional Quarterly. Lots of D.C. machinations and meaningless celebrity tripe but sometimes Politico spots big issues before the rest of the media picks them up. The CBC and BBC have tried to incorporate Politico-style programs but they all suffer from various biases that come with having a couple of dudes curate coverage, so tread carefully.
