i studied abroad in souther china for 9 months, my major is communication design, so we didnt really have anything to learn over there, since chinese students do have a problem with creativity.. the learning standard was pretty low, but other than that the whole experience was really amazing. beautiful and diverse countryside, old fucking culture and interesting as fuck when chinese people tell you stories about it, the food can bring tears to your eyes, huge cities to with millions of people and empty nothingness in one country, the language is complicated and first (countless dialects, signs instead of letters, etc) but it also is really, really interesting and grammar-wise quite easy to learn (i'm german though..)
this whole experience was so intense that i did my graduation project about this (writing and designing a culture guide ie "china for beginners") and after graduation i started directly studying chinese. i was really good at it, it was very interesting again, you can learn to write pretty quick desu (developing handwriting, feeling of flow, recognizing, etc.), your memory gets better btw. sadly i developed major panic attacks during this time because of life reasons, so i quit after one semester and started working a kick ass job luckily. i regret quitting until today though.
you should do it.
