Ever been to a show where they’re selling cds in the back and tell you to pay what you want? Say you really like the band. You’re not just gonna grab one and walk away, right? Or imagine you’re a simp and you’re watching amouranth do asmr and she’s tonguing that ear-shaped microphone just right. Are you not gonna send her some bits? These kinds of revenue streams already exist. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it won’t make money. I spend just about every waking moment of my life wondering why people do the retarded shit they do because I’m constantly forgetting that people are driven primarily by emotion. On one hand you might feel guilty if you walk away with a cd without paying for it and on the other hand you might feel compelled to pay for it to show your appreciation for an artist that made you feel things. In a wealthy society, consumerism isn’t about meeting people’s needs, it’s about fulfilling their desires. People will pay for anything if they think it will fill the empty hole in their heart.
