The chain cannot fucking survive on transaction fees alone, and even if it miraculously could, having your entire security budget rely on a fluctuating variable that could at any moment drop below safe levels is a stupid fucking design.

Even after 3 more halvings bitcoin has to be in the $1million/coin range to even have viable security. If it fails to reach this target then miners will not be rewarded enough, some will drop, but if the rewards are not enough even for those that remain it will be 51% attacked and its game over.
