What's the consensus on the difference between a good and a great school? I'm 18 hs senior, and I'm looking at college after a gap year. I can go to college on my parent's dime, and I need to find out if an 11K Uni Washington is a better investment than a 37K Rensselaer Polytechnic.

If I do UW I can do a community college to make it cheaper, but is that a good idea?
