sharding (aka breaking up a database continually into smaller parts) is a nigger tier solution. you wind up with islands of data that become impossible to practically reassemble.
you think the problems are bad now with eth not being able to compute the total number of coins in existence... this problem will become 1000x worse once its sharded into a million pieces and those pieces start going on / offline.
