he's been making a lot of bad calls... He was just one of many bears who "called" that crash, and he had just enough funds to stay solvent. Many others had exactly the same insight but bought a little bit earlier or had a little less money. I don't know that he's the brilliant investor people make him out to be, or just a massive contrarian who got it very right that one time.
