for tokyo and central japan it's big nagano alps area, and hokkaido in north with great ski resorts, and also tall mountains and in south closer to osaka and nagoya with Hyōgo resorts

in USA you will pay home insurance that is 2-3x european prices, property tax is calculated by annual price of home combined with land price. In europe the property tax is 50-80% smaller because it includes only land price

So in Usa, it's not much different to rent or ownership, in europe it's good to own usually.
