Je mehr Betreiber sich für eine Version entscheiden, desto größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass diese sich durchsetzt. Endgültig entschieden ist das Rennen um die Versionen, wenn sich eine Mehrheit herausgebildet hat. Die Version des Fork, die die Mehrheit auf sich vereint, ist dann die gültige. Die alte Version stirbt zumeist ab, weil sich nach dem Herausbilden einer Mehrheit die Minderheit dann ebenfalls für die Gewinnerversion entscheidet.
