>Rogers pass cont...
>Over 200 people died to Avalanches in the pass over the first 25 years of the line. Eventually, in 1916 a 6 kilometer long tunnel was built under the pass, the mountains had won.

...until 1962

The Canadians came back with firepower, to lay seige to the mountains of Rogers Pass, and reclaim the territory they had retreated from in 1916.

The pass was selected for the route of the Trans-Canada highway. To help fight off the wrath of mother nature, the Canadian military established Operation PALACI, and stationed howitzer artillery alongside the highway to fire explosives at the mountains, and dislodge avalanches before snow could accumulate enough to threaten the highway. This, in conjunction with an extensive system of bunker-like snowsheds, that the highway passed through, avalanche barriers and prepositioned plows and snow-excavation equipment is what allowed Canada to keep the highway through the pass open, and allow access to beautiful Glacier National Park
