I'm a nurse, so it's lots of sitting behind a screen and then coding a patient for 50 fucking minutes straight while they are squirting out blood as fast as you can put it in. Even faster if you are doing effective compressions. Then the family comes back and watches you break their loved ones ribs and pump them full of the very thing that is making them bleed out and insists you keep going and the Dr is like lol sure because alteplase costs $26k per bottle. It's a little more nuanced than that but really if you don't get someone back within a few minutes they are better off dead. And obviously when someone is bleeding you should not give the strongest anticlot drug in the world.
I don't like my job but the fuck else can I do to make $60/hr? I've seen enough soft penises so not interested in working with hard ones. Not gay either.
Before this I worked at an airport doing whatever. Making hoses for hydraulics, refilling oil tanks, driving a fork lift, changing tires, recycling, garbage, pressure washing. It was always either freezing cold or soaked in sweat. The only constant was coming home filthy and covered in oil. You can still smell it on your skin after a shower, I'd swear it was in the air. Even wearing gloves you constantly had to wash your hands with that gojo orange oil and sand soap. Before you could even clock in you had to go through security too. I sometimes envy the guys who just play with spreadsheets all day while wearing a suit. Comfortable clothes, no mess, just your numbers and papers and a fat bonus based on your metrics. There's even a watercooler to talk about the weather and who's screwing who's wife around. If I could do it again I'd have chosen statistics or software engineering. Insurance is the closest I'd ever get to the medical setting. It's unreasonable and a completely pointless job. People run their bodies into the ground, at best you give them another couple years to be fat/stupid and do the same thing that got them in the hospital.
