Marriage isnt a completely a scam if you recognize it for what it is. It's a business decision where you do get real tax benefits from your status. Having to pay alimony is something totally separate from marriage itself, really. You'd have to pay alimony even if you just cohabitated with a woman for years and then split up instead of actually marrying her in the first place. Its called palimony. On that note, platonic female roomates can claim palimony from you if they are smart enough to go through the paperwork, get a lawyer,and pretend that you guys were ever actually a thing. It especially helps if they've worked a job that pays less than you,and you've made a habit of paying a larger share of rent, bills, or sharing groceries. Its all about maintaining a lifestyle for the less wealthy person in a relationship.
