As I think about this play, I realize it is purely binary based on who the mystery financier receiving preferred warrants and shares is. All of the other stuff is dependent on that one piece of missing information. And make no mistake, there is no other alternative. The convertible warrants deal guarantees there is no less than one mystery financier.
The short thesis: If the entity financing Bed Bath as they navigate a way beyond bankruptcy is Hudson (or if not Hudson, some other malevolent financier), as the shorts believe, then the longs are megafucked. In this case, Hudson absolutely will dilute the bloody shit out of the longs and Bed Bath will be forced to reverse split no less than 10-1 to stay listed. Of course, when that happens shorts will pile on and re-short down to single digits and back under $1.00, and that's a wrap folks. After the dilution is complete, Bed Bath will tread water at best, but will ultimately capitulate to bankruptcy after the longs also leave the play en masse. GGWP.
The long thesis: If the entity financing Bed Bath is RC or Carl Icahn (or some other benevolent unknown), as the longs believe, then the shorts are megafucked. In this case, it is easy to speculate that the financier will provide capital to ensure that Bed Bath avoids bankruptcy and navigates their way to cash flow positive operations. This will perk up Wall Street's interest as the heavily shorted stock all of a sudden becomes a steal to slurp up for long-term holders, and a bust for shorts who need to rapidly buy back in to close their temporarily still-green positions. But, there are not enough shares to go around for every short, and thus the squeeze is real, and it is spectacular.
Ultimately, that's what it comes down to. I have looked for the 3rd option, as I try to avoid false dichotomies, but, I don't see it. Its feast or famine. But a feast for who? A famine for who? We'll find out soon enough.
