I'll be applying to investment banks and asset managers this autumn, because I graduate in 2015. Can any of the finance (emphasis on second syllable) people here give me advice on what to do this summer in order to increase my chances?

I have money to burn but I'm not sure if spending money on some random stocks / ETFs and then making up reasons for the purchases later on, will make for convincing stuff.

Also, how over or underrated is the track (target uni -> top IB -> so on)? Is finance a meritocracy where I can go in to it at a not so prestigious position (i.e. credit analyst, big 4, rather than IB or S&T) but then work my ass off and achieve great things?
