Like say you're $1000 deep in position X but you want to hedge against a loss so you put $500 in some contrarian position that goes up when X goes down. But why the fuck wouldn't you just reduce position X to to $500 if you were worried about being too balls deep in it?

Seems to me like any play with an accompanying hedge could just be reduced to a smaller play without the hedge while achieving the same risk profile. Am I wrong?
